On the afternoon of January 21, 2025, the 2024 Annual Summary Meeting of CIETAC was held in Beijing. The entire leadership team of CIETAC, and the cadres and staff of CIETAC and its sub commissions gathered together to review the achievements of 2024, analyze the new situation, and comprehensively deploy key tasks for 2025. Wang Chengjie, Vice Chairman and Secretary-General of CIETAC, delivered the work report of 2024, and Xu Yanbo, Party Secretary of CIETAC, presided over the meeting.

In summing up the work in 2024, Secretary-General Wang Chengjie pointed out that 2024 was an extraordinary year for deepening reform of the arbitration system and advancing high-quality development of arbitration. All cadres and staff of CIETAC, with united hearts and strengths, determination and perseverance, adhere to the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese characteristics for a New Era, fully implement the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and the Second and Third Plenary Sessions of the 20th Central Committee, and actively integrate into the new development pattern. Positioning at a high starting point to build a world-class arbitration institution, CIETAC has been upholding the independence and impartiality of arbitration, striving to enhance the service capacity for international arbitration, comprehensively strengthening the building of the institution and teams, constantly improving the layout of diversified services, extensively conducting international arbitration exchanges and cooperation, deeply engaging in global governance, and speeding up the training for foreign-related legal talents and the construction of think tanks. Remarkable results have been achieved through these concerted efforts, with growing international influence and competitiveness of CIETAC and enhancing credibility of China's arbitration, and a new chapter for the development of arbitration has been written during advancing Chinese-style modernization.

In 2024, new records were made in arbitration cases, and the quality and efficiency of case management were greatly improved. A total of 6,013 new cases were accepted with a year-on-year increase of 14.82%. The total amount in dispute reached RMB 188.96 billion yuan with a year-on-year increase of 25.12%, surpassing RMB 100 billion yuan for the seventh consecutive year. 758 foreign-related cases were accepted (a year-on-year increase of 17.52%) with a total disputed amount of RMB 81.125 billion yuan (a year-on-year increase of 53.75%), and the average disputed amount per case reaching RMB 107 million yuan. The cases involved 93 countries and regions (a year-on-year increase of 5), of which parties were from 77 countries and regions (a year-on-year increase of 6). Since its establishment, CIETAC has handled cases from 166 countries and regions, demonstrating its continuously increasing internationalization and enhancing capacity to serve global parties. In 2024, no CIETAC award was set aside by the court, and the arbitral awards were fully enforced in foreign courts such as the United States of America, Canada, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Kazakhstan, South Africa, Argentina, and Vietnam, and were also enforced overseas in the courts of Hong Kong SAR (China) and Macao SAR (China), etc. An award with an enforcement amount of RMB 240 million yuan was successfully recognized and enforced in Saudi Arabia after withstanding the strict scrutiny of the Islamic Shariah, setting a record for the highest amount of a Chinese arbitral award enforced by Saudi courts. An award with an enforcement amount of RMB 1.2 billion yuan was recognized and enforced in Canada, marking the highest enforcement amount for a Chinese arbitral award overseas, further enhancing the credibility of China’s arbitration. The 10th edition of the Arbitration Rules of CIETAC has been fully implemented. The new rules reflect the best arbitration practice, fully respect the parties’ autonomy to nominate arbitrators, and promote the high-quality, efficiency and flexibility of procedure management. The new rules have gained widespread attention and high praise from the arbitration community both domestically and internationally, and won the award of "Demonstration Cases: China Service" at the China International Fair for Trade in Services, highly praised for the innovative, leading and advanced features.

Strategize the blueprint and start a new journey, and forge ahead with a new chapter. Looking forward to 2025, the development of arbitration will face new opportunities and challenges. Under the current situation, arbitration also bears the important mission of coordinating the domestic rule of law and the foreign-related rule of law and participating in global governance. Secretary-General Wang Chengjie said that CIETAC will be more proactive, responsible and practical, with the goal of building a world-class arbitration institution with a more improved system, more precise management and more thoughtful services. CIETAC will adhere to independence, fairness and efficiency, comprehensively deepen reform and innovation, vigorously promote the digitalization, intelligence and informatization of arbitration, provide high-standard, high-level and international arbitration services, continuously improve the credibility of arbitration, and vigorously promote the high-quality development of arbitration. CIETAC will take new solid steps to vigorously promote Chinese-style modernization, and show new actions and responsibilities at the new journey from this new starting point.
